Day
Arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport and met by local assistant. Drive for 1½ hr to reach Lhasa city (3,650 m), the capital of Tibet. Check-in followed by acclimatization walk in the old town.

We visit Lhasa’s famous landmark, the Potala Palace, which was the Dalai Lama’s residence until 1959 and houses an impressive collection of Buddhist works of art. We walk for Just 2 minutes from our hotel and there in the heart of the old city, is the popular Jokhang Temple, where pilgrims come from all over the world.

In the morning we hike to the large monastic university of Drepung which was once home to more than 7000 monks in a maze of chapels, dormitories, and temples. In the afternoon we visit the Monastic University of Sera where rhetorical contests and philosophical debates are always taking place.

From Lhasa, we drive to Tsetang which is 138km southeast. Tsetang is the gateway to the ancient Yarlung valley which was used as a base by the Yarlung kings to unify Tibet. Later in the 7th century, Lhasa became the capital and power center under King Songsen Gambo. On the way, we stop at Samye Monastery which is the first Buddhist monastery of Tibet.

We head for the pristine Yamdrok Lake (4,441m)) up in the mountains where yaks and sheep graze on the shores. The lake is fed by streams and ice melt. We have a picnic lunch at the lake and then climb up to cross the Karola Pass (5,200 m). Then we walk across a beautiful landscape at the foot of the imposing Noijin Kangsang glacier.

In the morning we head for Gyantse, one of the most beautiful villages of central Tibet where farmers and ranchers meet in a picturesque market. We visit the monastery which has extraordinary frescoes and a famous stupa (Kumbum) with 72 chapels. In the afternoon, we drive for 1 ½ hours to reach Shigatse. Then in the late afternoon, we head for the famous monastery of Tashilhunpo, which is the headquarters of the Panchen Lama and houses around 950 monks. We then walk through the market where we can find some beautiful as well as fake antiques.

From Shigatse, we drive back to Lhasa

Transfer from Lhasa to Gonggar Airport for your return flight.
